Just for the record.... I'm based
in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK.
A few words about me...
or just skip it and go straight to
the photos!
The photographs and the writings here
suggest some of my interests and activities. As a kid I was an avid reader
of 'Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future' in the 'Eagle' comic http://www.dandare.org/dan/dan.htm
and hoped to be an astronaut. Taking a
self-imposed 'reality check' I 'compromised' and applied to
take a degree in astrophysics at Edinburgh University http://www.ed.ac.uk, but realising
just in time that my maths was shaky I kept astronomy and space alive as a hobby
but professionally switched to my other main interests, wildlife and
nature, taking a degree in Ecological Science.
I enjoyed undergraduate work and - let's be honest - student life
so I jumped at the opportunity of post-graduate research at the University of British
Columbia, Canada. Research on national parks and conservation in 'the great outdoors'
was a wonderful experience and a fantastic photographic opportunity which I
worked on for 2 years. After completing this work I travelled
through Canada, the USA and Mexico for several months via the legendary
Greyhound bus and local transport.
Returning to the UK I worked on environmental impact
assessment for a time, including work on the then new and burgeoning North Sea Oil industry.
After several years I went into university lecturing, drawing on these experiences and taking the travel opportunities this
field made possible. The 'joy of travel' was tempered by a realisation that 'even' travel/tourism
has major consequences for the environment and for local cultures. Happily, an opportunity
arose to develop research studies in 'sustainable' tourism and travel and I continued university lecturing in Edinburgh
until recently. My book, 'Managing the Tourist Destination' , Continuum, now
Pitman, (2003) continues in print.
Photography, astronomy/space, writing and travel continue to be passions of
mine. I'm lucky to now be
able to choose which photographic or writing assignments I take
on. The photographs in this website are a 'taster' of my work. I hope you
enjoy at least some of them. And if you 'really' like them... they can be
purchased from me. frank@frankhowie.com
